Positive Discipline Parenting Tool -  CURIOSITY QUESTIONS/PREGUNTAS DE CURIOSIDAD

8/19/2020

Have you noticed how often you are telling instead of asking ?  When we are asking instead of telling, we are giving our children the opportunity to think and feel capable. If you find yourself telling instead of asking, stop for a minute and think about how you can change the command to a curiosity question.

Here are some ideas, feel free to post them around the house to help you remember how to use curiosity questions:

¿Cómo puedes resolver el problema con tu hermano? /
How can you solve the problem with your brother?

¿Qué necesitas hacer para que tus juguetes estén en su lugar? / What do you need to do to clean up your toys?

¿Cuáles son las reglas para jugar con el agua? /
What are the expectation to play with the water?

Positive Discipline Parenting Tool -  POSITIVE TIME-OUT/TIEMPO FUERA POSITIVO

8/5/2020

Positive time-outs are intended to stop negative behaviors and to help children cool off and gain self-control using available resources, including you (mom/dad/caregiver). When children are young the time-out teaches them how to do this and gives them an opportunity to practice those new skills. As the child gets older, time out is both a reminder to the child to regain control over himself and a push to do so.

Here are some tips for creating and using positive time outs with your child:
  • Create a “cozy corner” or other safe, comforting place with your child where he/she can retreat for comfort and renewal.
  • Help him/her decorate it and ask him/her to choose comforting objects, such as stuffed animals, blankets, books or quiet activities.
  • Encourage him/her to give it a special name.

Positive Discipline Parenting Tool - Routine Chart/Poster de Rutinas

7/23/2020

Who does not have a to do list to keep us on track? Well, children need something similar, too. Sometimes we struggle with our children to complete their jobs before a transition. Having a routine chart visible helps guide your child, develops time management, and supports independence. It is important that your children help in the creation of the chart. After you choose which transition is most difficult, here are the steps to follow through (Examples of difficult
transitions: bed time, clean up, eat breakfast, etc). .
  1. Make a list (Let your child tell you all the things that needs to get done, “¿Cuáles son las cosas que tienes que hacer para ... (limpiar el salón o ir a dormir)?
  2. Copy all items on the chart or take pictures of them doing each step (Ask children to choose what they want to do first and if it is applicable let it go, “¿Qué deberías hacer primero, segundo, luego...?).

Positive Discipline Parenting Tool -  COMPLIMENTS & APPRECIATIONS / HALAGOS & APRECIACIONES

Compliments and appreciation bring us closer together. These last several months have been challenging for families. There is a lot of stress between parents and children. But, do you know that giving and receiving compliments helps to decrease stressors and fosters a positive atmosphere? Here are some compliments in both Spanish and English. You can use them this week, taking the time to model and practice kindness, in Spanish. You can cut them and post them around the house to remind you to say a compliment.

“Agradezco que hayas puesto tus trastes en el fregadero” / "I appreciate how you put your dirty dishes in the sink“

"Me di cuenta cómo ayudaste amablemente a tu hermana con su tarea mientras yo estaba en una junta de trabajo” / “I noticed how kindly you helped your sister with her schoolwork while I was in a work meeting.”

El Arcoíris

Consejos Para Padres ~ Parenting Tips
If it is not physically or emotionally dangerous, it is important to allow your child to learn from their own experiences. By letting your child have an experience independently, you are allowing your child the opportunity for natural consequences to occur. Help your child build problem-solving skills when you comfort and guide them by offering possible solutions. Your child gains a sense of ownership and self-competence when they are able to make a choice.

Consejos Para Padres ~ Parenting Tips
Some parents had the luxury of growing up in bilingual households and learning two languages from an early age. For these parents it can be a struggle to maintain the minority language, or the language that is other than English for those of us here in California. Other factors arise for parents that are not quite fluent in the minority language. Perhaps they studied a couple or several years of the language in high school or college. Perhaps they grew up with some family members speaking the language and do have a rudimentary understanding of the language but are unable to fluently produce the language.

Primavera Maravillosa

Consejos Para Padres ~ Parenting Tips
Young children thrive on routines and consistency. By using simple, instructive songs, or following a chart with simple sequencing, or both, you are helping your child to build lifelong healthy habits. Positive Discipline also teaches us that children need to feel belonging and significance. When we invite our child to participate in remembering the routine and taking responsibility and ownership about what comes next, we are helping our child to feel important and a part of our family.
Try to set routines for when you wake up in the morning, for leaving the house and for bedtime. Create family routines such as Sunday breakfasts or Thursday park play dates.

Our amigos love making moco/slime and plastilina/playdough. But have you heard of OOBLECK!?
"Oobleck is a non-Newtonian fluid; it has properties of both liquids and solids". So, it's not as sticky as slime, and more liquid than playdough.

Here is an oobleck recipe from LiveScience:

Oobleck ingredients
  • 1 part water
  • 1.5 to 2 parts cornstarch
  • Small amount of food coloring (optional)
Mix ingredients
  • Start with the water in a bowl (or wading pool!) and add the cornstarch a bit at a time.
  • Keep stirring until it has a gooey consistency. You may want to use your hands.
  • When the oobleck is just right, slowly add food coloring, if you want. This can be a challenge to get it mixed properly.
  • Play with it.
Things to do with oobleck
  • Grab a handful and squeeze it. Let it ooze through your fingers.
  • Make a puddle and quickly drag your fingers through it.
  • Put it into a plastic container and shake it or quickly bump it against a table.
  • Jab at the oobleck and then slowly let your finger sink in.
  • Roll some oobleck into a ball. It becomes solid, but when you stop moving it, it will melt back into your hand.

Watch the video below to see a cool video of OOBLECK dancing!

Los animales de la Granja

Consejos Para Padres ~ Parenting Tips

From birth, babies learn about the world and their surroundings with the support of loving parents and caregivers. When we respond to our baby’s cry, moan, or other sounds, we are building our bond, or attachment, with our child. A strong sense of attachment in early childhood has been linked to stronger emotional outcomes and better relationships in adulthood. It’s a good thing for your child to want to be with you! And it can be challenging when we want or need to take some time without our baby. The stress, commonly known as separation anxiety, can be difficult to manage for both adults and children.

Pájaros y Huevos

Consejos Para Padres ~ Parenting Tips
The benefits of bilingualism for children and adults continue to be proven in research with advantages ranging from cultural connections, enhanced cultural awareness, higher academic achievement scores, and reduced incidence of dementia and Alzheimer’s. You can introduce multiple languages to your child from an early age. Whether you practice the one-parent, one-language approach or the language location approach (speaking a specific language in specific locations, i.e. Spanish at home and English outside the home), it can help by building specific times into your schedule to speak the target language.
